This is my lab #2 for Stage Make-up
Lab #2 Proposal
Buzzy the bee was never like normal bees. She was half bee and half human, her mother was a bee and her father was a human. Buzzy never fit in with the other bees, she was always being made fun of. One day Buzzy was so tired of everyone in her beehive, that she wondered out into a small field that the bees were always told to stay away from. Old legends have said that the flowers in the field were under a spell and would have side effects on bees. Buzzy never believed in that legend until today. She went down to suck the nectar out of the yellow flower and BAM she fell down into the field of flowers. She woke up and thought nothing was wrong. She went back to her beehive and that is when her mother saw her and screamed. Buzzy’s head was covered in yellow flowers and green grass. Her ears were twice the size and they were now shaped like honeycombs. Buzzy looked in the mirror and began to cry. She ran away and to this day she was never seen again.
Techniques
1. Original latex appliances- Antennas
2. Original hair appliance, full wig/headpiece appliance, Wonder flex skull cap with grass and flowers
3. Altered Form (non-human) a bee
I know that I really wanted to create a bee aspect for this project.
TThis is the original design that I came up with, I know it looks messy but to me looking at it it makes sense.
I was really happy with how this elevation came out. I wanted the person who was looking at my design to be able to look at it and say "oh that is a bee"
These are all of the colors that are incorporated in my begin. The back will be applied to my latex application, around my eyes, and on every other bee stripe.
The goldish-yellow color is going to be the color of my honeycombs that will be my ears.
The green will be the headpiece that I painted green and also applied flowers and leaves all over it to represent a meadow/garden where the bee got the disease.
The yellow will be incorporated in the headpiece with the flowers and also in my face that will be the other stripes that are on my face.
Here is my driven art. I know it looks messy but I am not really good at drawing but I did try my best. The hexagons that you see to the left are here to represent the honeycombs that will be my ears in my design. The flowers and leaves represent my headpiece that goes on my head to cover my hair. This shows the meadow/garden that I talk about in my proposal. The black stripe represents the stripes on a bee that I used in my design. One thing that I added in was black wings here but I decided not to use those in my design that I will put on my face. I put antenna like things on here but I ended up changing it and the mouth became the antennas.
The first thing that I started on was making my honeycombs for my ears. Sue wanted me to by trying to use plastic. I was very nervous when she told me that she wanted to try this. I used little white beads that were in a huge jar. I had to take water and put it in the microwave and I had to get the temperature up to over 150 degrees and then put the white beads into the hot water. I had to wait for them to change from white to completely see-through and take the beads out and the plastic melted together.

As you can see here a plastic container was not the right thing to use for melting the plastic. It did not allow me to get the melted plastic out completely and when it dried, it was stuck to the container. The picture on the left is the honeycomb-like thing that I tried to make. I HATED working with this product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It dried too fast and it was very difficult to manipulate the plastic to the honeycomb shape that I wanted. I feel like this should only be used on a project where someone is experienced with the plastic. I feel as though I wasted 2 days of work time on trying to get this plastic to work. I even tried to make a stencil so that it might be easier but that did not work either. It was hard to cut the plastic into the shape of the stencil.
Here is the stencil that I mentioned before. After I got melted plastic out of the container it was hard to get it even. I would not recommend this strategy to anyone else. It honestly made me start to dislike my project.
This is the appliance that I was able to create with the plastic. I was not happy with it but I just thought that I would continue the process and see where it goes.
After I tried to paint them to look like honeycombs they looked terrible. I hate them and was so sad about what I had accomplished.
I decided to take a break from the ears and I started to work on my eye appliances.
This is the appliance that is going to be used for my antennas. I was very happy with how they turned out.
Here is the completed latex appliances. I was not happy with how they looked when I put the glow in the dark paint over top of them. It kind of gave them a cloudy layer instead of an intense color.
My headpiece was originally white so I had to paint the entire thing green before I was able to put the flowers on top.
I am extremely happy with how these honeycomb ears turned out. I worked so hard on these because the other ones looked so bad. It took me about 5 hours to complete them because I wanted to make sure that everything on these was perfect. I would have to say that these appliances are my favorite things that I have created in this class. I am very proud of them.
I cant believe where the time has gone and it was already time to complete my final lab in stage makeup. I think out of all of my labs this has to be my favorite that I have ever done. I know that this will not be the last time that I create something like this. Sue has helped me fined a new passion for something that I love.
FINAL PROJECT
I colored some of my eyes first so that my skin tone could not be seen through my eye appliances when I put them on. I also then measured how big my eye appliances were so that I knew where to not put paint.
I than added the yellow and black stripes to my face. I then put my head piece on so that I could start to get the overall feel of the design. I then added the antennas and did this with spirit gum. I thought that it was going to be difficult to talk with the antennas on but they were very light and it was easy to talk with them.
I didnt paint my ears green here but Sue had the bright idea to do that in my final run through to help it look more like my ears were gone.
I kind of rushed through the process of outting the stripes on and I feel like on my nose area you can tell that, it looks very mess and I knew I needed to do a better job in my final one. I also think that I could have made my eye appliances a little bit smaller. I didnt realize how large they were going to look when I got them on. I also added a coat of glow in the dark paint on top of them and I feel like they look cloudy which is something that I would have changed if I could go back know.
The honey combs were something that I was really proud of. I loved how they turned out so here is a close up picture of them.
Here is a picture after I took off all of my appliances. Sue wanted me to get a better look at how my stripes kind of just stopped and that she could see my skin under the parts of the eyes that I did not glue down. I knew that I needed to make my stripes look better for my final!!! ]
Overall, I had an amazing time in both Stage Makeup Classes, it pushed me to do something that I thought I could never do. I want to thank Sue for all the patience that she had with me and for all the support and help that she has given me. Sue you have really made me grow not just in makeup but as a person and I am thanful for that. You are someone that has made an impact in my life.
THANK YOU!! :)
