Final Project Design

I cannot believe that this journey is coming to an end. I have had such an amazing time in this class and feel like I not only grew as a person but as an artist too. This class seemed to go so fast. When I was presented with the idea for our final project I kind of freaked out. I had no clue what I wanted to do. I first started doing research online of other special effects makeup that other people have done. One thing that really caught my eye was the zipper on the face. I always liked how this made someones face looked split so I knew I wanted to incorporate that. Then I knew that I wanted to have bruising and a wound on my face because that was the more exciting project that we had done. Then I knew I had to pick another application and I didn't want to just keep the person a human. I decided that the person would actually be an alien. The story below is how I came up with my entire idea.

My character’s name is Merci, she is from the planet Mars and is an Alien. Mars is very close to the Earth and Merci has been dreaming about visiting Earth ever since she was very little. Mars is known as a terrestrial planet because it is composed of silicate rocks and minerals. Merci belongs to a group on Mars called the Geminimicals. Each geminimical looks like a gem or mineral stone that would be found on Earth. Merci has always wanted to go to Earth and find her stone. One day she decides to head to Earth, she buys a zip-up human face so she can blend in on Earth. However, the zipper gets stuck and she cannot sip it the whole way while trying to get the zipper up she trips over all the rocks and minerals below her she hits her head on a huge rock. It begins to gush blood. When Merci gets up she realizes there is a cut on her forehead and there are bruises around her eyes and cheeks. She knows she cannot go to Earth like this.

The three techniques that I will be using from this class are Altered Form (non-human) to relate to the Alien Merci who is a form of a gemstone. Next, I will be using original latex application to adhere the zipper to my face. Then I will use bruising for when Merci had fallen into all of the rocks beneath her. The last technique that I will be using is bleeding wound appliance for when Merci hits her head on the huge rock when she falls to the ground.

November 13th in class

Step 1 is to draw the entire image on sheet protectors for as many steps as you have. I first started off with the stone looking part. I am going to use the white face paint from my kit. Then I will used black to draw on the lines.

Step 2 is to put the foundation all over my forehead. I will later have to remove some of the foundations for where the wound will be placed because it will not stick.

Step 3 is to create the burise around my eye and on my cheek.
Step 4 is to put the wound on my forehead, cover the edages with foundation, and add wet blood to the wound.

Step 5: The last and final step will be to put the latex zipper on my face with spirit gum.

I did not know that I was not going to be able to use the zipper that I bought to put onto my face. I was shocked when Sue said that I had to create it out of latex. I did not think that I was going to be able to accomplish this. The first thing I needed to do for the zipper was to cover it in a mixing medium. This wil prevent the latex from getting stuck in the teeth of the zipper. I did know know anything about this before I started working on this project.
This is the zipper after 2 layers of the mixing medium. I wasn't sure if I had enough on there but Sue thought I did.

While I was waiting for the glue to dry I needed to start working on my wound. I first created the shape of the cotton and then put the latex over it and I put about 4 layers of latex over the wound. At this point, I did not know that we needed to create 2 appliances for each and I did that at the end of the class.
That was all I had time to do for the first day of working on our final projects. I had written down that I was going to accomplish a lot more, but not everything always works like you plan it out,

November 20th

During this class period, I felt very behind because I was not able to make it to the free day of class because of the roads.
I knew that I needed to work fast but make sure that everything was neat.

The first thing I did was take my wounds off of the sheet protector. I did this with a Q-tip and powder.
Then I used purple and red to fill in the wound and yellow to help blend it on the outsides.

When I flipped over the wounds I realized that there was cotton still show and coming through. I knew that this would stick to my face in I didn't cover it. I added two more layers of latex to the back of my wounds. This time no cotton was showing.

Then I move directly on to creating my bruises. I first did the small one on my cheek and I again used yellow to fill it in and purple and red to create dimension for the bruise.
Then I moved on to the bruise around my eye. This one was going to take longer because it was bigger. Again the first thing I did was fill the space in with yellow, then purple and red used to deepen the bruise. I really liked how this bruise on my eye turned out. It is exactly what I had in mind.

It was then time to start the gemstone part that I will be using inside the zipper. My skin was irritated this day so Sue said I could do it on my hand. The first thing I did was draw a makeshift zipper outline on my hand.
I then used the white from the BEN NYE kit to fill in that entire area. I really like the coverage that this white had because I did not want any of my skin color showing through.
I drew where my nose and mouth would be to give myself a guideline. I then used a small paintbrush and the black from the face painting kit to create the lines of the stones.
The line that is farthest to the left is very wrong.  Sue suggested that I put a lighter black down first and then a darker black on top to give the lines dimension. The line closest to my nose is how the lines on my final project should look. I cannot go back in and add the lighter black to the lines. It has to be put down first or else the lines will look very messy.

In class, I was able to get one layer of latex onto the zipper. However, I ran out of time and had to take some work home to finish it. I knew that it was going to take a lot of latex to actually make it look like a zipper.

Later at home

It took a couple of hours to add about 5 layers of latex onto the zipper.

When it was finished this is what the zipper looked like. I took the latex off of the zipper with a Q-tip and powder.

I ended up making two of the zipper appliance although it took so long and was very frustrating at times. However, I am very pleased with the outcome of this zipper. At this point, I was not sure how I was going to make the main part of the zipper at this point. I forgot to take a picture of the whole zipper with latex on it because at that time I was annoyed and couldn't wait to be done with it. I regret not taking a picture because this was a vital step in this entire process.

These are the completed latex zippers, I used a Q-tip ad powder to get them off of the actual zipper. I am pretty pleased with how they turned out. The only problem now is that I have no clue how I am going to make the slider. I thought about doing it by making the slider out of plastic and putting liquid latex over that. Then I thought about just putting latex over the slider, but doing multiple layer so that it was thick enough to gently peel off. I wasnt exactly sure what I wanted to do for the slider so I decided to move onto putting the wound onto my head and come back to it.

I used spirit gum and put a layer of that onto the back of my wound. I had made 2 different wounds, this way I could choose which one I liked better. For this try on I decided to use the bigger one that I made. However, when I put it one I realized that it was way to big. I didnt want the wound to take over the entire look. I am glad that I made a smaller one and decided that I would do it for my dry run and see if I liked it better.

The next day:

I then tried on the zipper that I had made. I tried on the thicker one to see how it would hold up. I can say that it was way to heavy and the spirit gum wasnt holding it. This was a clear decision to use the thinner zipper for the run thorugh and the final.

This shows my attenpt to make the slider for my zipper. I was not sure if it was going to work but I thought that this would be my only option because I am not aware of another way to make it. This is about 5 coats of latex on the slider.

Later that night I used tweezers a paintbrush and powder to get this appliance off of the 3D model. I was completely shocked I could not believed that it worked.  I am really proud that I made this decision on my own.

I then put a layer of latex and a piece of cotton ball that I made to fit into the little pocket. The reason I did this was to help lift up the slider a little bit so it was not sticking flat against my nose and couldnt be seen.

TODAY IS THE DRY RUN OF MY FINAL PROJECT!!!!
I cannot believe this class is basically over, all we have left is the final day where we are graded on the application. This class has been so much fun and I am sad that it is acutally going to come to an end.

Here are the steps that I did for my dry run:

Step1: I drew a small outline of the zipper on my face so I had a guide of where to put all of the white a black lines.

Step 2: I used the white cream paint that came from our BEN NYE kits. I filled in the entire area of where the gem will show under the zipper.

Step3: Then as I talked about before I put grey thick lines down first to help give my lines dimension. I did this with the face paint water colors.

Here is a closer image of the lines

Step4: Now it was time to use a tinner brush and put black over top of the grey.

As you can see here the grey behind the black made the it stand out more and gave it more deapth.

Step5: Next, I started the bruise on my eye. I was not liking how it was turning out so I decided to move on and to come back to it at the end.

Also part of step 5 where I made the bruise on my cheek.

Step 6: It was time to add the wound onto my head. As I said before I used the smaller wound and I think that it looked way betetr.

Different angle

Step7: I applied the zipper using spirit gum and held it down on my face for about a minute. Since I used the thinner zipper appliance it was easier to get it to stick down on my face.

Side view of the zipper

Step8: I added wet blood to the wound. I added quite a bit because I wanted to effect to be better. I also added the slider part to the zipper with a little bit of spirit gum.

Here is a side view of it. The gemstone face part was not having a big effect like I wanted it to so I decided that I wanted to add blood inside the white part.

HERE IS MY FINAL LOOK! I wasnt feeling as confident in my look as I hoped I would. But after I showed Sue and told me that I should be proud of what I had completed. Over all I am very happy with this look. I would have never been able to complete a look like this if it wasnt for Sue and her class. I am an education major and it was really nice to take a class that I truly enjoyed. This class pushed me out of my comfort zone and I am thanful for Sue helping me grow as a person and an artisit.
