Today I just found out that I will have to create wigs for a show that Seton Hill ups on. I have no clue what will be expected of me. Sue asked me to join Molly's Makeup/Wig crew for Clybourne Park. This way I will be able to see what goes on and what is expected of me. I am an Education major so all of the terms that are being thrown at me are very confusing. Hopefully, I will be able to get a grasp of the Theater world.
Update: Molly has been very helpful to me throughout this process. Even though I ask her many questions she is always there to help. I am very grateful for Molly. I feel as though I am getting a good idea of how things are run down here.
Starting Process:
MY PROPOSAL-
Lab #1
Trixibella is half bird and half Iguana. She is a mix because her mother is a full blooded bird and her father is a full-blooded Iguana. Tirixibella has always been a very curious BIRGUANA. Even
with her strange species, Trixibella has a rare condition that causes her to stay young forever
and she will never get older and never die. Curiosity isn’t always a good thing. In this case, it was a very bad one for Trixibella. Her mother and father never wanted her to leave the nest in their tree because the world outside is so dangerous and people do not know that this species exists. As soon as Trixi get down from the tree she is viciously attacked by an orange and white cat. It doesn’t end there Trixi gets massive scratches, and even starts growing orange and white fur because she was infected by the cat.
Techniques:
This character will have hidden eyebrows and then above the hidden eyebrows, there will be an original latex application applied of feather eyebrows to show that she is able to fly. On the sides of my cheek, there will be one dorsal crest applied with latex to show that Trixi is part reptilian. The altered form is shown because this character is part bird and iguana. After Trixi is injured there will be cuts and bruises to show the battle she was in. Next, because she is infected from the cat an original hair appliance will be put on the chin reaching up to her cheeks.
-After I was able to get this approved from Sue, I was able to start with my creativity.
The first thing that I started was my color primary palette.
I struggled with this at first, I do not find myself to be a creative person and I really wasn't sure where to start on the blank piece of white paper.
After talking to Sue I was able to get it started. I just needed to add all the elements that were required and paint it using the colors that I wanted to use.
Below is my final design. I am pretty proud of it considering I struggled with it in the beginning.
I added the aspect of a feline with the yellow nose and cat ears. For my design to show that it can fly I added wings, bird claws, and a beak. To show blood I made red drops. The last element that I added onto it was a dorsal crest and eyes. This represents the reptilian effect.
When I took pictures of my last design I put into a generator. When the colors were generated, not all colors showed up. Sue wasn't sure why this was happening so I am going to post a picture of two color schemes.
Next, it was time to start my line elevations.
I decided to do a rough draft to get all my ideas out on paper. This is the first thing that I completed. Then it was time to take these ideas and put in onto my face.
Here is my first line elevation completed. After looking at it for a while. I decided that I did not like it. It didn't flow and wasn't appealing to me. I wasn't sure what I was going to do but I knew that I needed to change it for me to be happy with it.
After taking some time to think, this is the design that I came up with. In this design, I completely added on an iguana eye. I feel as though this made it more visually appealing. Next, I moved the cat scratches down to beside my mouth and not on top of the feather eyebrows. I didn't want the cuts to take away from the eyebrows. The other thing that I decided was to only have one iguana dorsal crest on my face. I did this because I think two would have been too many and wouldn't allow this look to be completed.
This is the line elevation of only my 2D designs.
NOW IS THE EACH COLOR ELEVATION DONE ON DIFFERENT SHEETS.
The cat scratches will also be a latex appliance and there will be 2 of them. A bigger one and a smaller one to give the cat-like scratch look.
This is the iguana eye that I added to my design. I will draw this on my face using water-color paints.
Next, I decided to start on my feather eyebrows. I wasn't sure how this was going to go so I wanted to get it out of the way. This would allow me to see if I needed to create new ones.
This is how I started my process. First, tape down a sheet protector to the table and put a layer of liquid latex down. Then I added on one feather and added a layer of latex. I continued this process until I was happy with the turnout. I decided 4 feathers on each side were good. Two white and two yellow.
Here are process pictures of me creating the feathers
I wanted to get started on the dorsal crest right away. I knew that this appliance was going to be the hardest one for this assignment. I wasn't sure how I was going to make it but Sue told me that I was going to use a type of clay. The picture above is me working with the clay. I was shocked that it was so liquidy. It was very frustrating at first because I had to use a hair dryer to get the clay to become a harder consistency.
Eventually, I was able to let the clay sit out on a sheet protector for about 3 days and I was able to break a piece off an and use that as my starting point.

Eventually, I was able to let the clay sit out on a sheet protector for about 3 days and I was able to break a piece off an and use that as my starting point.
Here is the piece I broke off. I used the drying clay and clay that would never dry to create the texture on the dorsal crest. I was really happy with how this turned out. I was able to use an Exacto knife to then cut out the exact piece of clay that I wanted to use.
These are the two cat scratches that will go beside my mouth. They are made out of cotton balls and latex.
The cuts have been taken off of the sheet protector and more layers of latex have been added to the dorsal crest appliance.
This is the finished product of the dorsal crest. I put a total of 6 layers of latex on to get this outcome. I am very happy with it and I am glad I continued with this.
I really wasn't sure how I was going to create the cat beard but then Sue gave me the option to go into the costume shop and pick a piece of fur to use.
This was the piece I chose but I had put on my color elevation that the hair was going to be orange. Sue told me that I could use a little bit of paint and rubbing alcohol to get the effect that I needed.
I am super proud of the way this fur turned out. I love the textured look that it has. It completely looks transformed. Like it isn't even the same piece of fur.
Next, I wanted to paint the dorsal crest and cuts. I wanted to test the colors out first and see what colors mixed together look like. When I was happy with the outcome I then started painting my appliances.
I am extremely happy with this dorsal crest. I am glad that I decided to put the darker green on the pieces that were raised.
Now all my hard work has paid off. I am finished with all the appliances. I am so excited to put all of these on my face and see it all come together during the dry run.
DRY RUN!!!!!
The next step was to draw on the iguana eye with a brown pencil and paint the rest of my face to my lips green. I wanted a lighter green so I used white to make it lighter. I love the color that it turned out to be.
Then I realized that I shouldn't have fully put on the green because I was going to have to wipe off spots to put my appliances on. I can either leave spaces open or I can use a baby wipe to wipe it off.
I put on my feather eyebrows using spirit gum. Then I wiped off the area on my cheek and put the dorsal crest on with spirit gum.
Then it was time to start on my iguana eye. I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out but I wanted to give it my best effort. At this point in my process, I was very happy with the way it was looking.
I really like the way the yellow on my eye stands out and matches the yellow in the feather eyebrows.
I LOVE THIS DESIGN. I took a picture that blurred out everything in the background. It looks so cool!!!
LAST AND FINAL STEP!!! I really like the aspect that the beard added to this look. Like Sue said this addition completely changed the line of my jaw. I am overall really happy with this project. I am going to add in a few more pictures below of the final result.
I really enjoyed this project and I hope you enjoyed looking at my process!
